CAD Designer and Document Controller – Flexible Location with travel to NWE Terminal and Pipeline Network Locations
About the role
We are seeking an experienced and detail‑focused CAD Designer and Document Controller to support engineering, projects and operational activities across our UK & Ireland assets. Reporting to the UK & IRE Engineering Manager, this role will be responsible for producing high‑quality CAD drawings and ensuring the controlled management of engineering and technical documentation throughout the project and asset lifecycle.
You will play a key role in supporting safe, compliant and efficient engineering delivery by ensuring documentation is accurate, current, traceable and aligned with Exolum standards and regulatory requirements. The role requires strong technical capability, excellent organisational skills and the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
Key responsibilities
- Back check contract and internal designs
- Undertake and quality check surveys and Produce estimates of the works required to support engineers and project managers
- Liaising with in-house construction supervision teams.
- Alteration and amendment of CAD drawings
- Produce site sketches, site layouts for Front End Engineering, Detailed Design and Construction delivery teams.
- Produce detailed drawings for the design team.
- Coordinate with delivery and design team to produce workable solutions.
- Be aware of applicable Exolum standards and ensure designs comply.
- Implement CAD standards to ensure the high quality of drawings
- Work closely with the engineering team assisting with any CAD requirements
- Produce sections and engineering drawings from survey data / 3D Models.
- Provide administration assistance to design team where required.
- Assist with design vendors and tenders, including responding to vendor clarifications/technical queries. Participate in technical bid evaluations.
- Review of QA documentation for handover work packs, preparation of commissioning procedures and site commissioning.
- Maintain and administer the Engineering Document Management System (EDMS)
- Control the lifecycle of engineering documents including creation, review, approval, revision, distribution, archiving, and retrieval.
- Ensure all engineering documents are issued in accordance with company procedures, project requirements, and regulatory standards.
- Interface with engineering disciplines, projects, operations, contractors, and suppliers to ensure timely document submission and review.
- Maintain document templates, naming conventions, and numbering systems.
- Support implementation or improvement of EDMS tools.
- Train users on document control procedures and systems where required.
- Act as MOC coordinator and provide assurance to the UK & IRE Engineering Manager that the MOC process is applied correctly.
- Working knowledge of Regulations and Directives: DSEAR (ATEX), EWR, EER, Machinery Directive, PUWER, COMAH and CDM.
- Previous experience of working within Major Accident Hazard environments.
- Manage documentation/data/records within document management systems.
- Ensure activities completed are fully compliant with company policies, procedures and legal requirements, particularly safety and ensuring safe systems of work.
- Manage time and resources to ensure well controlled, compliant with the Working Time Regulations and meet responsibilities for health and safety.
About You
You will be a detail‑focused professional with proven experience producing CAD drawings in an engineering or industrial environment, complemented by strong document control capability. With a recognised CAD qualification (or equivalent), you will be confident working within regulated settings and have a working knowledge of standards such as DSEAR, PUWER, CDM and COMAH. You will be an effective communicator who works collaboratively across teams, applying a proactive, solutions‑focused approach while balancing technical accuracy with delivery priorities; experience in a COMAH or Major Accident Hazard environment is desirable but not essential.
