Process Engineer- UK wide – Permanent
About the role
Working as part of the UK Engineering function, the Process Engineer is responsible for delivering process engineering support across Exolum’s terminal and pipeline network. The role focuses on ensuring safe, efficient and compliant operation while supporting design, optimisation and improvement of systems and equipment.
You will contribute to both project delivery and operational excellence, ensuring risks are identified, assessed and mitigated, while driving continuous improvement in process safety and performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake process design and detailed engineering activities, including process simulations, calculations, optimisation and equipment sizing and selection.
- Carry out specialist calculations such as relief valve sizing, NPSHa and process safety time calculations, alongside pipeline hydraulic analysis.
- Develop and review engineering designs, including PFDs and P&IDs, ensuring consistency, accuracy and compliance with standards.
- Lead and support design and operational requirements across storage systems (oil, chemical and gas), pipelines, boilers, biomass and water treatment systems.
- Conduct site surveys, hazardous area classification studies and process safety reviews to ensure safe and compliant operations.
- Identify opportunities for process optimisation, efficiency improvements and decommissioning through plant audits and analysis.
- Develop engineering solutions to improve reliability, capacity, quality and compliance of process systems.
- Manage process safety information, including asset registers and operating parameters such as pressure, temperature and flow set points.
- Ensure compliance with engineering standards, managing deviations and supporting Management of Change (MOC) processes.
- Support project delivery by preparing commissioning plans, procedures and operational instructions, and providing commissioning support.
- Participate in process hazard studies including HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA and FMEA assessments.
- Specify and select plant and equipment, supporting vendor engagement, technical evaluations, FATs and SATs.
- Drive energy efficiency and utilities optimisation across site operations.
- Ensure compliance with key regulations including DSEAR (ATEX), PER (PED), COMAH and CDM, alongside relevant industry standards such as API, EEMUA and ASME.
- Maintain accurate documentation and ensure all activities align with company procedures, safety standards and legal requirements.
About You
The ideal candidate will hold a degree in Chemical Engineering and have experience within oil, gas or chemical processing environments. You will have a solid background in process engineering, including design, plant modification, commissioning and troubleshooting activities.
You will bring at least three years’ relevant industry experience and be comfortable working on brownfield modifications, Management of Change processes and operational improvement initiatives. Strong technical knowledge in areas such as hydraulic modelling, relief valve sizing, hazardous area classification and process safety studies (HAZOP/LOPA) is essential.
You will demonstrate a strong understanding of industry legislation and standards, including DSEAR (ATEX), PER (PED), COMAH and applicable engineering codes. You will be a proactive problem-solver with the ability to develop innovative solutions, communicate effectively and work collaboratively across teams.
Desirable experience includes working within storage and transportation environments or COMAH-regulated sites, as well as progress towards Chartered Engineer status (IChemE).

About the Benefits
- Salary £55,000 - £65,000 per annum depending on experience
